The meeting convened at 7:30 p.m. Dan Cruz introduced the following guest speakers: Fairfax County Supervisor Michael Frey (R-Sully), Captain Dennis Wilson (Station Commander of the Fairfax County Police Department), Officers Mike Deane and Eric Stallings from the Bike Team, Detective Todd Raleigh from the Criminal Investigation Section, and Officer Liz Barrington from the Crime Prevention Unit.Michael Frey provided the following updates:
- The new Sully District Police station will open on schedule.
- The new recreation Center should be complete by 2004. It will include a full indoor track, a pool, a fitness center and an auditorium large enough to host high school graduations.
- Sales tax increase from 4.5% to 5% is on the ballot for funding transportation projects in Northern Virginia.
- Dulles rail to be completed by 2006; will also extend metrorail to Dulles from Tysons; probably will extend metrorail down Route 66 eventually also.
- The Air and Space Museum at Dulles will open in 2003.
- Route 28 improvements will include 6 interchanges; 3 in Fairfax and 3 in Loudoun.
- The Cub Run water treatment plant off of Compton road will be expanded.
- There are several Citizens Advisory Committees that exist, if citizens are interested in participating on a particular committee they can volunteer by sending their resume to Michael Frey’s office. Also, Land Use Applications and highway maps are available to the public through Michael Frey’s office.
Captain Wilson, Officer Dean, Detective Raleigh and Officer Barrington spoke after Michael Frey. They provided the following information:At 9:10 p.m. a quorum was established and the business meeting was officially called to order by President Dan Cruz. Dan provided a summary of the minutes from last year’s meeting and a motion was made to accept the minutes as read, seconded and carried unanimously. Claire Morson gave the Treasurer’s report.
- The Fair Oaks police district is the busiest in the county due to many requests for services.
- Burglaries have increased countywide (7:30 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. are the peak crime hours).
- Juveniles commit 70% of the crime.
- The juveniles who are committing most of the crime in Gate Post Estates live at the Lee Overlook apartments.
- Gangs are growing in Fairfax County. The Fairfax County police web site will provide additional information about the gangs in our area.
- To combat the increasing vandalism and crime, the Gate Post Estates Neighborhood Watch Program should be reenergized. An organizational meeting will be held for Neighborhood Watch on May 9, 2002.
Dan Cruz provided the “State of the Neighborhood” report and introduced the GPE HOA Board members.
Dan mentioned that the auditors recommended bringing down the balance of the reserves because they are about twice the level that they should be for an organization the size of the Second Gate Post Estates Home Owners’ Association. He mentioned that 82% of each homeowner’s assessment goes to trash pickup, the balance goes to fund civic events that the Association provides for the homeowners. Assessments have not been increased since 1994, and will need to be increased effective January 2003.
Dan provided an update regarding the Gate Post Estates web site and stated that it has been updated and is fully functional.
Dan recognized several individuals in Gate Post Estates who had contributed during the past year. The following individuals were presented with a plaque for their time and effort: Jim Fowler, Michele Maravas, Sharon Davoren and Joe Roscher.
Dan mentioned that in memory of Tim Booth, he would like to plant a tree with a commemorative plaque in a common area in Gate Post Estates.
An election was held for two open Board positions. Dan Cruz and Claire Morson, the current President and Treasurer, stood for re-election. Being the only candidates, they were re-elected unanimously.
Dan reported that Michele Maravas is working on getting a kiosk for the front entrance of the neighborhood.
Dan also stated that he would meet with Supervisor Michael Frey (R-Sully) about the completion of the paving of the roads throughout Gate Post Estates and the repair of some crumbling asphalt at the end of Round Post Court.
A motion was made to adjourn the meeting, and seconded. The meeting adjourned at 9:50 p.m.
